Breña Baja

The most touristic point of Breña Baja, and one of the most touristic of La Palma, is the area of Los Cancajos. This area is located between the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de La Palma, and the airport. It is for this reason that it stands out as a key and strategic point for visitors within the Island.

Initially, the population that resided in Los Cancajos was mostly involved in fishing. Over time, and from the 1970s, it became a highlight in terms of tourism.

In Los Cancajos you can enjoy its promenade, which runs practically from end to end, or you can practice diving in its crystalline waters. With a rich marine life, among the species that can be found are rays, moray eels, octopuses or fish such as viejas, sargos and palometas.

The center of Los Cancajos is its beaches. These have majestic black sand and are considered one of the most famous of La Palma for its location, its atmosphere and the beauty of its surroundings.

ALodging is essential and within Los Cancajos there is a great variety of hotels and apartments of different kinds, which make up a perfect offer. In addition, within this tourist center, belonging to Breña Baja, there are numerous restaurants that offer a wide gastronomic offer, ranging from local to international.

But the municipality of Breña Baja is not only about the sea. For those looking for another alternative, the viewpoint of Montaña de la Breña. also stands out here. This impressive viewpoint is one of the best in La Palma and from it you can see much of the east side of the island, from the sea to its midday area and the summit. In this Breña Baja viewpoint there is also the Cruz del Milenio, a sculpture that rises above its highest point.

The municipality is also a perfect place for hiking trails such as the Camino de la Faya. Along its route, fourteen kilometers long, this trekking route runs from a maximum height of 1,530 meters to sea level. In this line, the tour in its full version passes through several municipalities and allows you privileged views of each of them.

The route owes its name to the faya, a shrub very present in the Canary Islands and that can reach up to 20 meters high, although the usual height ranges between 3 and 8 meters. Its wood was used to make household utensils or for the production of manure, among other things. In addition, it should be noted that, in La Palma, as well as in La Gomera and El Hierro, there is an endemic species and its scientific name is Myrica rivas martinezii.

Las Cruces festivities are known in Breña Baja, where each local decorates the crossroads with the best that in each house, including family jewels. Next to the Crosses, guarding them, there are the mayos or rag dolls that stage everyday images of island life or its characters.

Another of its best-known festivities are La Fiesta de la Montaña, held the weekend following the Co-Patronal Festivities of Santiago Apóstol and Santa Ana, and when a coven of "witches" descends the Mountain, surprising the attendees during the Fiesta and frightening them. And we cannot fail to mention the Pilgrimage of Socorro, one of the most crowded of the island, a symbol of tradition.
