Located in the northeast of the island of La Palma, Puntagorda is known for its coastline of dizzying cliffs, for its beautiful landscape, in which the flowers of Tajinaste stand out, the summit, specifically in the Llano de las Ánimas, in the months of May-June, as well as its spectacular almond trees in bloom, inspiration of the famous Almond Tree Festival as well as its coastal and bathing area of Porís de Puntagorda.
A Unique Spring
Puntagorda has an urban center where the Church of San Mauro, stands out, which was the first church in the town, built in the sixteenth century, and the house of the priest in front, located both buildings in the lower area of the municipality, in an environment of peace and tranquility.
For hiking lovers, the municipality has several beautiful hiking options, such as the GR 130 between its neighbor Garafía or its neighbor Tijarafe; the PR LP 10, in the midlands; the PR LP 11, Camino de la Rosa that reaches the Roque, passing through the Llano de la Animas; the SL PG 61, which leads to the Mercadillo or the SL PG 64, which leads to the sources of the municipality. Another beautiful walk is the one that leads to Porís de Puntagorda, the PR LP 11.2, a bathing and coastal area of great beauty, a symbol of palm tradition in its booths.
Nature and Viewpoints
Puntagorda is an ideal place to enjoy nature in all its splendor, either by admiring the rugged coast of Guelguen, abundant in rare or threatened species, such as the evergreen or the pico cernícalo scrambling shrub, or by approaching some of its viewpoints that pose a challenge to beauty. Among the most popular viewpoints is, for example, the Drago Viewpoint, where you can see a magnificent view of the El Roque ravine and next to which an old royal road passes.
For the most daring visitors, the floating viewpoints on the Izcagua ravine allow you to enjoy a unique sensation thanks to their corridors with glass railings, which transmit a sensation of flight while observing the infinity of the ravine of the same name. The floating viewpoints of Izacagua are precisely the starting point of the famous zip line 617m in length, and more than 700 in altitude, which allow the visitor to undergo an exciting experience through the fall of the ravine. The Montaña de Matos Viewpoint also stands out, from where you can see the neighboring municipality of Garafía, on the other side of the Barranco de Izcagua, and the cliffs of the coast.
Finally, the Miraflores Astronomical Viewpoint offers magnificent views of the neighborhoods of El Pino and El Pinar, with their houses and crops, while at night it covers the visitor with a blanket of stars.
For those who like to enjoy nature, the recreational area of El Fayal is located in a forest of fayas. The area is equipped with a playground, picnic areas with drinking water and stoves, as well as public toilets and a self-guided path for your tour, where you can spend a pleasant day with your family.
Festivities and Gastronomy
One of the best known events in Puntagorda is its traditional Almond Tree Festival, which is usually held between January and February, depending on the flowering of this tree and as a prelude to the Palmerian carnivals. The curious who come to this event will enjoy music, dances and a variety of sweets made with almonds (as well as the first carnival talcum powders).
Also at the end of August, the festivities take place in honor of its patron, San Mauro, which includes a pilgrimage of the most crowded of the island.
Those visitors who want to try some of the gastronomic delights of the municipality can come to the local Farmer's Market. Open on Saturdays and Sundays, in its stalls you can find a wide range of food products; fruits, vegetables, meats, honeys, wines, traditional pastries, cakes or Palmerian cheese and good samples of the craftsmanship of the place.
