Los Llanos de Aridane Old Town

Typical Canarian style with a history of agriculture and tourism

Located in the west of the island, the town of Los Llanos de Aridane is the economic capital of La Palma due to its prominence in the agricultural and tourism industries. The city stretches out from the Plaza de España; home to the church of Los Remedios and what are believed to be some of the oldest Indian laurel trees in the Canary Islands. Beyond lies the Plaza Chica with its carved stone fountain. At the top of town the picturesque Fernandez Taño and Calvo Sotelo streets are lined with traditional Canarian-style low houses.

The traditions of the island encapsulated in the Plaza Glorieta

In the south of the city is the municipal market with its pleasant square and Indian laurel trees. From the nearby bus station it is easy to plan a trip to the neighbourhood of Las Manchas to visit the Plaza de la Glorieta, made by local artist Luis Morera. Another option is to take a walk through Llano de Argual, an area traditionally used to grow bananas. It now hosts a flea market every Sunday selling crafts and antiques. Don´t miss the glass blowing studio in the corner of the market.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
