Climbing in the Barranco del Agua

Well-appointed routes in Puntallana

A landscape that is definitely worthwhile venturing into is the Barranco del Agua (Water Ravine), in the north-west of La Palma. This protected area has the best examples of cactus existing on the island and is the ideal setting for sport climbing. The area, located in Puntallana, is excellent, with 140 well-appointed routes – developed by local climbers - on vertical walls that can reach heights of 40 metres.

Basalt rocks in La Ferrata wall

Easily recognisable due to the tunnel that runs under the road, which has man-made channels carrying the ravine’s water, this area is climbable all year round but is often somewhat damp during the winter. The ascent to some of the routes must be done using metal ladders and cables – which are already installed – owing to the fact that some sectors of the rocks are are loose basalt (particularly the Ferrata wall) and are almost unapproachable at the base. For this reason it is always advisable to wear a helmet.
