Driving route around the north of La Palma

La Palma

A little big trip from Santa Cruz de La Palma to Villa de Garafía

Green landscapes, warm beaches, high points with spectacular views, villages steeped in charm... Travelling around the north of the island by car is one of the best ways to understand why La Palma is popularly known as the ‘Isla Bonita’. A peaceful route lasting a whole day, running for the most part through leafy inland areas where one can marvel at the spectacular local nature, as well as some stretches along the coast.

A beautiful route taking in some of the treasures of La Palma

Departing from Santa Cruz de La Palma along the LP-1 towards Puntallana, the beautiful Playa de Nogales, Puerto Paja and Martín Luis await you, and you can take a dip in the latter. Heading inland you will find the San Bartolo Viewpoint and the magical forest of Cubo de La Galga. Carry on towards San Andrés y Sauces, to lose yourself in the Los Tilos Forest and relax in the natural swimming pools of Charco Azul. Continuing towards Barlovento, enjoy the pools of La Fajana and the views from the La Tosca Viewpoint, famous for its dragon trees, the Gallegos ravine and the La Laguna Recreational Area. And afterwards, you have to decide whether to continue along the same road, which leads to Barlovento, or take the LP 109, known as the Las Mimbreras road, to reach Villa de Garafía where you simply cannot miss El Tablado (Protected Landscape) and the La Zarza y la Zarcita Cultural Park where you can walk amidst indigenous cave art; and the picturesque village of Franceses. For the return journey, choose between the LP-109 and the LP-1, and discover some new places on the island. A route full of surprises! The route ends in Tazacorte, passing through its historic old town and enjoying the seafront promenade, the harbour beach and the local gastronomy. From here you can take a boat to spot marine fauna or admire the Tajogaite volcano. A route full of tradition, nature and surprises!

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
  • Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
  • Use the waste- paper baskets and, insofar as possible, separate and place your recycling waste in the appropriate containers.
  • Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
  • Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
  • Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
  • In natural spaces and at viewpoints, do not leave the trail or the spaces designated for people to be in.
  • Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the public furniture and items for visitors, such as information panels or telescopes and binoculars.
  • Drive carefully and responsibly.
